Dr. Timothy Niewold - Leading Lupus and Autoimmune Research at HSS
An expert in autoimmune disease research with extensive research experience in lupus and related rheumatic conditions, Dr. Timothy Niewold, serves as the director of the Barbara Volcker Center for Women and Rheumatic Diseases at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. Timothy Niewold directs research initiatives focused on autoimmune diseases, overseeing faculty development and funding strategies.
His work has expanded the center’s research funding and clinical registry for lupus, supporting investigations into autoimmune disease mechanisms and risk factors. It also includes leadership of a federally supported lupus registry and developing a mentoring program that has helped secure external funding across the Department of Medicine. His laboratory studies genetic susceptibility and early diagnostic approaches for autoimmune disorders, contributing to enhanced understanding and treatment strategies for conditions like lupus.
